ECF
Elemental Chlorine Free Pulp bleached without the use of chlorine gas.
Eco System
The plants, animals and microbes that live in a defined geographical area and the physical environment in which they live. An eco-system has the means of producing both energy and the materials for life on an ongoing basis.
Effluent
Wastewater that has been discharged either to a sewer or to a stream or other body of water.
EMAS
The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), used by the European Union since 1995 and updated in 2001, regarded as the superior environmental standard. The scheme requires transparent public reporting, monitoring, auditing and employee involvement in its implementation. EMAS is designed to deliver continual improvements in a company's environmental performance.
Environmental Management System
Part of a general management system, consisting of organisation structures, planning functions, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, fulfilling, analysing and maintaining a company's environmental policy.
EU Eco-label
European Union scheme to promote 'green products, including paper.
