Galley proof
A proof of text copy before being made into pages.
Gamma
A measure of contrast in photographic images.
Gathering:
In binding, the assembling of folded signatures in proper sequence.
GCR
Acronym for Gray Component Replacement.
Gear Streaks
In printing, parallel streaks appearing across the printed sheet at same interval as gear teeth on the cylinder.
Generation
Each succeeding stage in reproduction from the original copy.
Ghosting
A faint image from another area of the sheet that reappears in the solid.
Gigabyte (GB)
One billion bytes.
Global Warming
The rise of air temperature at the Earth's surface caused by the build-up of gasses in the Earth's atmosphere which trap radiant heat from the sun. The principle culprits are CO2, CFC's and Methane.
Grain
In papermaking, the direction in which most fibres lie which corresponds with the direction the paper is made on a paper machine.
Grammage
(GSM) Grams per square metre. The term used to denote the weight of paper or board. Literally the weight of a piece.
Gray scale
A strip of standard grey tones, ranging from white to black, placed at the side of original copy during photography to measure tonal range and contrast (gamma) obtained.
Grip into the job
A printer's term where the job allows the use of an unprinted area for gripping while printing, thus eliminating the need to provide a gripper margin on the job.
Gripper edge
The leading edge of paper as it passes through a printing press. Also, the front edge of a lithographic or wraparound plate that is secured to front clamp of plate cylinder.
Gripper margin
Unprintable blank edge of paper on which grippers bear, usually ½" or less.
Grippers
In sheet fed printing presses, metal fingers that clamp on paper and control its flow as it passes through.
Ground wood pulp
A mechanically prepared wood pulp used in the manufacture of newsprint and publication papers.
Gumming
In plate making, the process of applying a thin coating of gum to the non-printing areas of a lithographic plate.
Gutter
In printing the blank space or inner margin from printing area to binding.  In paper making a description of a paper fault where a u shaped deormation occurs in the sheet or reel running in the machine direction.  Also known as piping or rope marks.
